Glenn Kuehn

I previously had a "spotlight" feature, and I feel fortunate today to have a revised version. The previous one was not bad as such (as it was honest and accurate for the time), but it was rather self-aggrandizing, and glorified things that shouldn't be admired.

I can now write from a more admirable place. In sum, after High School I went to UW-Eau Claire and lived with Matt Miller, and then with Matt and Eric Jagar. I was lucky to spend a semester studying in Japan, and am still trying to figure out a way to go back. Although I changed my major several times, I settled on Philosophy and subsequently went into graduate school. Somewhere in the midst I accepted being gay and wondered why I hadn't managed to do so years before. I emerged with the Ph.D. in 2001 and already (through necessity) had 6 years of assistant lecturer/adjunct/instructor/assistant instructor/adjunct instructor/assistant adjunct instructing lecturer teaching experience (including a couple semesters at Edgewood College). In 2001 I was given "The" opportunity in academia: a tenure-track job. Unfortunately, by that time alcoholism and a penchant for the debaucherous side of life had set in, and I fell....hard. Fortunately, near the very end in 2003 I sought help....and it has stuck.

In 2004, and needing to find employment (and thinking I still wanted it to be employed doing something that I liked) I went back to school (one more time) at the Culinary Institute of America. It was strange....34 years old and I found myself living in a dorm room again with someone who was 19. It wasn't easy, but the CIA is an insane place and so the craziness of living in a dorm again kinda fit in.

I finished in early 2006 and moved to South Florida to begin again. I had continued my recovery and gained a degree in something that could get me a job anywhere (I'm not knocking teaching Philosophy as a profession...as it is something I dearly love...but it's a lot easier to get a job when you can cook). And so that's basically what I have now.

As of 2007, I'm living in South Florida, working primarily as a chef in a Marriott resort, teaching part time at a local, community college, and (day by day) living a pretty good life with my cat, Ginko.
